A great future needs a strong start
Proskauer offers an environment that is challenging, rewarding and inclusive. New associates have an opportunity to make a meaningful impact from day one, drawing strength from a highly collaborative and intellectually stimulating environment – and knowing that they’re part of a team that’s devoted to helping them succeed.
When you come to Proskauer, you’ll develop in a workplace that supports you, encourages you, and helps you evolve from a recent law school graduate to a well-seasoned practicing professional. We’ll help you attain the skills necessary to make your mark on the world.
The power of summer
Proskauer’s summer program is designed to replicate, as closely as possible, the experience of being a lawyer at Proskauer. You will work on complex and challenging legal matters, learn from leaders in the field and experience our unique culture. We will take every opportunity to show you first-hand why your work matters and how it will make a difference.
As a summer, you’ll have the chance to gain a first-hand perspective of successful lawyering by observing experienced lawyers in action and contributing to the matters. Through this experience, you’ll get exposure to everything from meetings and conference calls to depositions and arbitrations.
Get a running start
Whether you’re shadowing a senior lawyer, hearing a colleague offer insight into a new aspect of the law, or honing your skills with an outside consultant or professor, you will have access to a multitude of opportunities to strengthen your skills at every step of your development as a lawyer at Proskauer. Each fall, we bring together new associates from all offices to orient them to the practice of law and the Firm. This full immersion, multiday training program – called Proskauer Institute – addresses questions and timely, topical issues.
Mentoring
New associates are matched up with an associate advisor when they join. After you have had a chance to develop informal mentoring relationships, associates in their second year and above are asked to select a partner or senior counsel to formally serve as their mentor. We provide an annual stipend to mentors, conduct mentoring training and organize periodic events.
Investing in your future
We offer all associates an annual training budget to become active in bar association activities and attend outside programs. We also present substantive skills and training programs in-house throughout the year for lawyers at all levels of practice. Some of our offices are accredited CLE providers, which makes earning credits even more convenient. We want our lawyers to be the most business savvy lawyers possible. And once we hire the right lawyers, we are invested in training them as effectively as possible.
Columbia @ Proskauer: Developing leaders program for midlevel associates
Proskauer has partnered with Columbia Business School to develop a series of multiday, executive MBA-style training sessions for all of our third-, fourth- and fifth-year associates in a program called Columbia @ Proskauer. Midlevel associates are asked to assume more significant roles on matters and to take on greater responsibilities. This transition gives associates the challenge of expanding their respective skill sets. Each level-specific training program provides midlevel associates with the tools to build critical business skills, enabling them to truly partner with our clients on their objectives and to instill a culture of excellence within the Firm.
Make a difference For Good
Words like ‘equality’, ‘fairness’ and ‘justice’ mean something to us and represent our deeply held personal values. Everyone at Proskauer is committed and encouraged to dedicate time, energy and expertise to a vast array of causes. Regardless of where we are in our professional careers, we all believe in going beyond, For Good.
Our pro bono efforts break boundaries. Whether helping refugees seek asylum, aiding victims of abuse, or assisting underrepresented individuals to seek justice – we champion the rights of others and fight for their freedoms. Underscoring our commitment to community, Proskauer recently became one of the few firms with a full-time pro bono partner, William Silverman, a former federal prosecutor with extensive civil and criminal experience.
Every first-year associate is given a pro bono project upon joining the Firm, and all of our lawyers are expected to perform at least 50 pro bono hours annually. Pro bono legal work helps underserved groups get vital help and gives lawyers great personal and professional satisfaction. That’s why Proskauer counts each pro bono hour as a billable hour. Associates can take on their own pro bono matters from one of the many legal service referral organizations with whom we partner, or generate their own matters based on personal interests.
Through a host of pro bono and volunteering initiatives, we advance, in particular, education, increased awareness of veterans’ issues, and improved opportunities for women in Africa through literacy and education.
