Shutts & Bowen was founded in 1910 by Frank B. Shutts, a Midwest transplant. Shutts was known for more than his law practice—he also founded the Miami Herald and was a prominent figure in Miami development projects such as the acquisition of Bayfront Park from the Florida East Coast Railway and the construction of the Tamiami Trail and Dixie Highway. Meanwhile, Crate Bowen, the other name on the firm letterhead, kept his focus solely on the firm.
